book review: white chalk

hello hello :*

just today, I will be writing my review in English, as it is part of the blog tour organized here. It's the first time I've taken part in such a tour so, naturally, I was really excited to read Pavarti Tyler's "White Chalk".

Before we begin, if you want to read the Romanian version of this review, let me know :*

I've read it quite fast, although the plot and the characters make it a very emotional book.

Long story short: Chelle is a 13 year old trying to make sense of life as she's growing up. This is definitely not your typical high school book, although the first couple of pages, where girl meets cool boy, sure point in that direction. Soon, we find out that Chelle's dad is an alcoholic, that her mom is definitely not there for her, so all she really has is her best friend and her sex life. You've heard me well: she is (physically) involved with one of her teachers and then she totally gets into the "new guy" from her school, Troy. I initially believed that she was sort of slutty, to be honest,  in the way that she seemed to know how to play the men around her, but this is definitely not the case. There's a sadness that really sticks out and Chelle's life is definitely not easy.

What I thought: although I would normally like this kind of plots, this particular book did not blow me away. Maybe I'm past this whole "discover yourself, discover the world" phase, maybe teenage sexuality was totally worn out in Lolita (no book could ever compete with that) or maybe it was a bit too deep for a summer read. I did enjoy it, but it wasn't my favourite book.

I rated it 2/5 stars on Good Reads.
